The Little Tea Shop

Mark works very close to downtown Memphis so he gets to try some of the best restaurants in town on a regular basis.  I, on the other hand, work in Cordova where it's a lot of Chili's and Friday's.  Ahhh, the 'burbs.  We had lunch together Friday before last, though, and decided we might just have to make it this a weekly thing.  I hate parking downtown during business hours but I think I can get over it for some yummy food!

On this particular Friday we ate at The Little Tea Shop (they don't have a website to link.)  Mark had been there before; I had not.  It's claim to fame is that it's the oldest cafe in Memphis and it's been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  I've gotta find the episode because I NEED to know how they make their corn bread sticks!

The owner was working the front counter and she was as friendly as she could possibly be.  She told us to pick a seat and no sooner had we both sat down than the waitress was there to take our drink order (just Diet Coke and water.  We weren't drinking heavy anyway but I don't think they had a beer, wine, or liquor selection.  They're only open 11:00 - 2:30.)  The "menu" is printed on a small piece of paper and you make your selection by checking off what you want and handing it to the waitress.

Mark decided to go with the chicken pot pie with spaghetti (!!!!) and sweet potatoes on the side.  I wanted the "Lacy special" which is chicken breast between cornbread sticks SMOTHERED IN GRAVY.  It comes with rice and I chose one more side.  I had to go with the fried okra!

Our meal came out super quickly and we dug right in.  My food was super delicious and everything I tried of Mark's was really good as well.  I'm not a huge fan of spaghetti.  Well, I'm not going to say that.  I'm going to say I am very particular about how spaghetti is made.  As in, please don't make a sauce with a ton of ground beef in it and expect me to eat it.  I like wet spaghetti!  Anyway, this had a very different flavor to it and was a little more dry than I prefer.  But the taste was good.  The sweet potatoes were amazing.  The real star of the show, however, those damn cornbread sticks.  They were the bomb(dot)com.  I was in love.

We were in and out of the restaurant in under an hour, perfect for a lunch break which I'm sure is what they're striving for.  We spent most of our lunch plotting other places to try on Fridays.  So some Friday soon we'll be heading to Happy Mexican or South of Beale or The Lunchbox or . . . or . . . or . . .

A Friday in the Life

Day in the life posts are fun. I decided to do one, and on a Friday, mainly because I LOVE MY FRIDAYS. It's my day off, there's no real routine after I get the kids to school and hit the gym. It's just my day. I wanted to commemorate one! Here we go.

My alarm went off at 6:55. I usually sleep later on Fridays but I had important business to tend to ...

I wanted to fix a good breakfast for the kids. It's usually "here, fix yourself a bowl of cereal." They requested homemade waffles. So good! I use just a basic recipe but, damn, it's a good one.  One of these days we'll have chicken and waffles.

After breakfast, I took Mark's daughter over to the neighbor who takes her to school then the kids and I got dressed.

It was hat day, J's personal favorite theme day of the week.

K2 has REALLY embraced the theme days.  "Friday was hat day!  What's tomorrow?"  "Uhhh, nothing. . . "  "So, I can wear a sombrero?" #prettymuch

I dropped the minions off at school. This has become more of a pain in the ass this year because you can't park in front of the school anymore. And the car line is an asshole. SERIOUSLY.  CAR LINE = BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ASSSSSSS EVAHHHH.

With them in school, I headed to the Y. I REALLY DID NOT WANT TO GO. But once I got in there and got my sweat on, I felt great. Amazing workout.

I ran back to Mark's house (which I guess is more or less also my house also these days.  Must stop thinking about it as his house) to shower. Did a few chores I didn't have time to do earlier, loaded the dishwasher, gathered laundry, made the bed. I'm weird: I totally cannot let the day REALLY begin without making the bed!

After that, it was time to get myself ready for the day.

Dressed and ready!

I met Ladonna for lunch at Chilis. I was starving after my workout so I had the honey chipotle chicken crispers. Love those!  After lunch, errands ...

Didn't need much but still had a bunch of different places to hit. Target (and they didn't have my shampoo and conditioner, boo), Natalie's (the liquor store), Kroger, Rite Aid, and Aldi.

Y'all. I love Aldi so much.

Those stuffed clams were only $3.29! (And more about those clams tomrrorw-ish!) I also bought a bag of shrimp, two bags of takis for the kids, and some chocolate truffle eggs and my grand total was only $15.

Sports Authority sent an email earlier that the location closest to me is closing down. I had to check and see if they had any good deals. I'm going to wait for prices to drop a little more before going crazy but I did score myself an $8 dress. After that, I went to the thrift store. I bought myself two pair of jeans for $16 total and GOOD NEWS!  I'm not as fat assed as I thought.

Shopping finds. Sorry for the huge granny bras front and center. My boobs are out of control and cute cheap bras stop at a C cup.

Oh! Shopping tip: Target has their "long and lean" tanks for $5! Get 'chu some!

I had about an hour before the kids were out of school so ...

I indulged in some ID channel. Love me some ID.

The kids came home and had a snack then we headed out to pick up Mark's daughter.

My kids drive me CRAZY when it comes time to get in the car. I swear, they won't buckle up until I lose my shit. And I don't just mean "lose my shit." I mean: LOSE MY SHIIIIIITTTTT!

"JUST BUCKLE UP, OHMYGAWWWW!  SERIOUSLY, JUST BUCKLE UP!  BUCKEUPBUCKLEUPBUCKLEUP RIGHT THIS INSTANT.  NOWWWWWWW!"

Also, how do I can I have hella wrinkles and look about 15 in this pic?  The fawwwww?

Anyhooters.  We picked up Mark's daughter and the girls played in the rain a bit.

It was a socially acceptable time to pour a drink so I did just that while the kids sang karaoke.

(This is lemonade and sweet tea vodka and I maybe/ probably have a post about it later this week!)

Mark came home not long after that. Jason and Kendra were coming over for dinner and drinks so I got started on some white girl enchiladas.

Kendra brought over a bunch of frozen drinks and we got to tearing them up!  What else were we tearing up? Aforementioned white girl enchiladas. I love my boyfriend for a lot of reasons but a main one is when he tears into my enchiladas and says, "I love Mexican food.  Even white girl Mexican good!"

Kendra's draaaaanks!

This one looked like a heart ... or a butt. You be the judge

We had a great time visiting and they ended up not leaving until 1:00 in the morning! Yeah, there are some Friday nights when we're in bed by 10:00. I really can't believe we were up that late!  So, that part?  DEFNITELY not a typical Friday night.  But, damn, it was a great Friday!
